History of the Planters Inn
The Planters Inn opened in 1803 to accommodate Lowcountry planters and their families with boarding and lodging.
In 1989, Hurricane Hugo set a record for hurricane damage by costing $9.47 billion to repair. As a result, a zealous preservationist set his sights on the enticing structure at 112 North Market Street. His sole intention was constructing the most beautiful historic hotel in the South. The building was a well-known mid-nineteenth-century emporium for luxury goods. In 1982, the emporium owner’s heirs granted Historic Charleston Foundation an easement to protect the 138-year-old structure’s historic significance and character.
Hurricane Hugo reaffirmed Charleston’s dedication to and passion for preservation. Following a multi-million dollar restoration and renovation, the hotel’s original joie de vivre was restored. It also created an instantly adored boutique hotel with:
- Sweeping piazzas
- A palmetto-shaded courtyard
- Spacious guest rooms
- And distinctively residential details, which make the hotel feel more like a grand Charleston home than a typical hotel
