I have been obsessed with the Zero George Boutique Hotel since it opened in downtown Charleston.

They did a fantastic job of renovating the structures while still respecting their history. And the property looks like any cluster of historic homes.

Only better.

The luxurious and charming Zero George is one of the best-kept secrets in historic downtown Charleston. Situated in Ansonborough, this restored 19th-century home blends modern luxury with southern hospitality. And the mix creates a perfect getaway.

From:

  • Its world-class restaurant
  • To its pet-friendly accommodations

Here’s what you can expect when you stay at the Zero George Boutique Hotel.

About Zero George Boutique Hotel

Zero George, named after the hotel’s actual street address, is a luxurious hotel with sixteen opulent guest rooms and suites spread across three painstakingly restored historic homes and two brick carriage houses. All are outfitted with plush linens and fine furniture for guests to enjoy. If you’re looking for a more intimate and cozy accommodation in Charleston boutique hotels, this is a perfect choice.

History of Zero George Boutique Hotel

Zero George Street is located in Charleston’s Ansonborough neighborhood. Its street address, 0 George Street (get it?), is just two blocks from the harbor.

Captain George Anson (1697-1762) was a young sailor in command of the H.M.S. Scarborough sent to defend Charleston from pirates at only 26.

He built Ansonborough, Charles Town’s first suburb, on land outside the walled community with money he won playing cards. The city named George Street and its cross street, Anson Street after him. The hotel is located on the “Federal Green,” a tract of land in Ansonborough owned by renowned American patriot Christopher Gadsden. The land was eventually divided into six wharf lots and 197 back lots at the turn of the nineteenth century.

Between 1803-05, Benjamin Du Pré, a French tailor, built a two-story wooden Federal Style home with an attached two-story brick outbuilding on Lot 4. In 1874, Charles Seignious, who lived next door on 317 East Bay Street, purchased the land and combined the two adjacent lots to form Maison Du Pré.

The hotel’s five historic properties have undergone painstaking preservation and restoration under the leadership of Easton Porter Group owners Dean Andrews and Lynn Easton. The team had the vision to create an elegant retreat that would honor the history of the building with modern amenities.

Despite being over 150 years old, two of the five structures that comprise Zero George Street today are relatively new. Previously, the addresses for the:

  • Two-and-a-half-story Charleston single house facing East Bay Street
  • And the three-story Charleston single house facing George Street

Were 40 and 38 Calhoun Street, respectively.

They were relocated as part of a preservation effort when their original location was set to be turned into a parking lot.
